Practical guide to moving in Utrecht
Narrow stairs and moving lifts
Many Utrecht homes have steep or narrow stairs, particularly upper-floor properties in Lombok, Wittevrouwen and the city centre. Measure large furniture, doorways, stair turns and balcony access before moving day. Tell the moving company which floor each address is on and whether the building has a usable lift. A lift listed in the building does not always mean a sofa or wardrobe will fit inside it.
A moving lift can move large items through a window or balcony and may reduce carrying time. Access still matters: the vehicle and lift need a safe place near the building, and trees, parked cars or overhead obstacles can get in the way. A lift with an operator typically costs €60 to €120 per hour, or €125 to €350 per half-day. Include photos or clear access details when the moving company asks for them.

Parking and city-centre access
You do not pay parking fees while actively loading or unloading in a Utrecht parking bay. If space needs to stay clear, use red and white barriers or signs, not barrier tape. City-centre access windows still apply. Closing a street is only allowed when there is no practical alternative and must be arranged through TVU at least ten working days beforehand. Ask the moving company who will arrange any required access measures.
Utrecht has a zero-emission zone with entry requirements for vans in the centre. Emission classes 0 to 4 are no longer allowed, class 5 is allowed until 1 January 2027, and class 6 until 1 January 2028, possibly 2029. From 2030, the zone is planned to cover all of Utrecht. Ask whether the moving van may enter your street and check the latest municipal rules before moving day.

Plan early and register your address
Try to book a moving company at least six to eight weeks ahead. The end of each month is busy, August is the busiest month, and student moves around 1 September add extra demand. A flexible date can make it easier to find availability. Weekend moves usually cost more, with an indication of around 25 percent extra on Saturday and 75 percent on Sunday.
Register your new address with the municipality no later than five days after moving. You can submit the change from four weeks before your move. The municipality may impose a fine of up to €325 if the registration is late or incorrect. This is separate from arranging the moving company, so put it in your calendar as soon as your date is confirmed.
